GW2 Mesmer Guide
The Mesmer in Guild Wars 2 is a mixed magic and melee class. They have the ability to create illusions, some harmful and some as diversions. A Mesmer will keep you guessing as to where he really is among an array of clones that look like the Mesmer. It’s only when they attack with their quick darting blades that you find out which was the real enemy all along. Mesmers fight by deception with clones and chaotic magics, as well as with their blades.
Mesmers have two basic types of illusions that they can control. Clones and Phantasms. The Clones are mostly harmless, but look identical to the Mesmer. They are good at creating confusion and distracting opponents. Phantasms on the other hand can harm their opponents. Depending on the choice of weapon, a Mesmer can create different types of phantasms that will fight their target until one of them is dead. The clones a Mesmer can summon always work to make the opponent think it is the Mesmer.

Some jump at their targets and then attack, others appear in the Mesmer’s exact location while the Mesmer teleports away. The phantasms that are available vary with weapon choice as well. Each phantasm fulfills a role, a melee fighter, a ranged attacker, and a magic attacker. The clones and illusions can also be shattered, and several different effects like damage, or dazing for example, can be caused by the Mesmer. This can be very dangerous to foes when multiple clones are destroyed all at once.
The other unique style of magic that Mesmers have are mantras. A mantra must be charged up ahead of time. This has a longer cast time and is better done before battle. It can then can be released quickly. Each Mantra has a set number of charges that it hold before it will need to be recharged. Mantras can also be released while casting another spell without interrupting the cast. This makes them very powerful for a quick unexpected boost of damage on a target, or a quick aid when it is needed.
Conclusive Overview of Mesmers
Mesmers wear light armor, and they can fill many roles depending on their weapon choice. Mesmers can be up front and striking fast with their swords while their illusions distract their targets away from themselves. They can also stay back, and send in their phantasms, and cast chaotic magic from the back line. In PVP Mesmer illusions are very effective, as other players can’t tell who the real Mesmer is. They cam also cast some spells to weaken their opponents and make them easier targets for other group members. Their mantras can be devastating as well to a PVP target who isn’t expecting it. They do require a bit of forethought and a Mesmer caught unprepared may not survive long.
