Farming gold in Guild Wars 2 is probably one of the most difficult things to do. Unlike other MMOs, GW2 discourages farming. Many players made plenty of coin when the game first launched by farming dungeons but those have since been updated to provide less valuable items and coin. There are still other ways that you can quickly and easily rack up coin in the game, though. Below we’ve outlined some of the best tips and locations for earning currency in GW2.
Blood Vials (Weak, Potent or Powerful)
One of the most valuable items on the Trading Post is blood. This comes in the form of vials which are typically labeled weak, potent or powerful, the latter being the most valuable but also most rare. These items are often dropped by enemies such as Harpies, Minotaurs, Snow Trolls, Skelk and some forms of Drake.
To ensure you have a better chance of looting the more rare and valuable vials of blood you should stack up gear that gives bonuses to Magic Find. This increases your chances of finding rare materials and items on enemies and works pretty well when farming blood.
One of the best locations to farm blood vials is the Frostgorge Sound (in the most Northern area of the Shiverpeark Mountains) but it should be noted that this is a level 70 to 80 area so for low or mid level characters this isn’t a good choice. But if you can go here you will get great vial drops from creatures such as Snow Trolls and Arctodus
Thin and Weak blood vials are still worth a decent amount of coin and can be farmed by even low level characters. Some good areas to get them are North of Lake Delavan (Queensdale – mainly from Skale and Bats), North of Eukaryan Caves (Kessex Hills – from Skale on the hills), Southeast of Scaver Plateau (Queensdale – by killing tons of Skale on the beaches) and in Wayfarer Hills by killing Minotaurs. You can also collect quite a bit from any area that has concentrated groups of Harpies which drop blood quite a bit.
Farming Orichalcum
Orichalcum is a pretty popular ore that typically sells on the Trading Post for about 2 silver each. It is almost always in high demand which means if you can farm a lot of it, you can easily rack up gold fast. The best areas to get this ore are the Cursed Shore, Malchor’s Leap and Frostgorge Sound.
In the Frostgorge Sound you can easily make quick runs for Orichalcum because of how the ore nodes are spread out. Nearly all of the node locations are in the Northeast area of the map. So if you do a quick run through that area you should find about 5 nodes you can mine for the ore.
The Cursed Shore has the most Orichalcum ore nodes. At the time of this writing there are nearly 15 different nodes to mine. Most of these are found in the South and Southeast regions of the map. You’ll also find several toward the most Western part of the map. Malchor’s Leap has about 8 different nodes to mine for Orichalcum. Most are found in the central area of the map with a few are located toward the West (underwater) and toward the North. Keep in mind that pretty much all of these areas are designed for character in the 70 to 80 level range.
Farm Events for Coin & Karma
One of the easiest ways to rack up gold in Guild Wars 2 is by simply doing as many events as you can. Find locations that have 2-3 or more decent events each and run through them, teleport around to other areas to complete their events and just keep making rounds. You have to be careful doing this because you can sometimes be reported as a bot if you’re not careful so don’t just sit around waiting for events to respawn, make your way around to other event rich map areas too.
Doing this can yield quite a bit of coin and Karma, not to mention experience. The best events will consist of defeating difficult enemies (champs and such) as well as event chains (events that have 2 or 3 parts in quick succession). If you run around with a large group of people you can quickly and easily get through multiple events and get tons of rewards including coin, Karma, experience and valuable items. For best returns be sure to have good Magic Find boost gear on so you can pick up items of decent rarity to sell on the Trading Post, too.
Other General Tips
When you’re out exploring or doing anything for that matter be sure to gather everything you can with your gathering tools and also pick up all loot from enemies. It doesn’t matter if it’s useful to you or not. If it isn’t you can immediately put items up for sale on the Trading Post and make profit. Do this when you’re leveling or exploring and you can earn a ton of coin even when not trying.
Buy or craft gear that has decent boosts in Magic Find to wear. Magic Find helps you to receive more rare and more valuable item drops from enemies you kill. Some players state that this gear doesn’t actually help you any but, from our experience, it does. Equip it and start killing anything and everything you can. Loot the bodies and sell off anything you don’t want.
